EmbodieDance is an hour-long immersive movement experience geared toward opening our senses, deepening intuition and widening our palette of movement skills together.  Through an eclectic blend of Eastern and Western somatic/energetic practices, we will explore our body’s structure, movement capacities, habits and possibilities as revealed through practice and reflection. We will also bring awareness to the elemental forces that move us:  time, space, sound, the environment, internal impulses and imagery.  Through in-the-moment explorations as well as easygoing phrase work, we go at our own pace and support each other in the process.  Come with a curious mind ready to play, sweat, laugh, release and grow in a friendly and nonjudgmental environment.

Refresh and transform your practice of yoga through this creative, exploratory approach to ancient wisdom. Through a blend of eastern and western contemplative movement practices including Japanese Butoh, Land to Water Yoga®, and other somatic disciplines, participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of ways to creatively and intuitively approach the whole practice of yoga, including asana (physical postures), pranayama (breath work), meditation and some chanting (sound vibration). Consider our work together as a “laboratory” in which we give ourselves permission to play and experiment with deep mindfulness and intention, yet with lightheartedness and non-attachment to the outcome.

In this workshop, we will explore the alchemical nature of opposing “worlds” in the bodymind, and the crossroads between them.  Through mindful repetition to build mental focus, deep physical engagement and communal exchange, we bypass our habitual responses and expectations to experience a full spectrum of human and non-human qualities – darkness and light, growth and decay, outrageousness and subtlety  - with willingness to access our most authentic selves in the process.  Both real and surreal imagery will reveal themselves through the body, with emphasis on becoming rather than showing.

Meets from 2-5 p.m.

Butoh is a hybrid form of dance theater that came out of Post WWII Japan and is now practiced worldwide.   Butoh links physical and spiritual practices from around the globe and accounts for movers of all ages and abilities.  It has influenced numerous fields of study, from architecture to neuroscience.  At the heart of this practice is the basic material of the body and its changing conditions.  As such, Butoh embraces a full spectrum of movement qualities, from wild physicality to meditative stillness.

In this workshop, we will learn some of the foundational concepts of Butoh that are tied inherently to Eastern concepts of self/no-self, impermanence, space and being. Through cultivating a state of emptiness, or nothingness in the bodymind, we release our attachments and create the conditions for infinite possibility.   In the spirit of Buddhist meditation practice and psychology, we will experience the power of acceptance of what is, witnessing without judgment and the strength of community support.  The workshop will begin with a brief introduction of the history and varied practices of Butoh.
