Mindfulness practices

Meditation and mindfulness practices are a powerful way to discover peace and ease amidst the turmoil of our lives.  Lani has practiced various forms of meditation since the early 90s, and continues to incorporate it into every aspect of her life and work.  In 2012, Lani took the Buddhist refuge vow with Lama Kathy Wesley in Erie, PA.   Taking refuge simply means that one honors the wisdom the Buddha taught and chooses to incorporate this wisdom regularly into one's life.  Although to some people Buddhism is a religion, to Lani and many others, it is simply a highly advanced form of psychology, a way to come to understand the workings of the human mind.  There is no dogma, and no belief in any higher power other than the great power of our own consciousness and being.  

Lani incorporates several key tenets of Buddhist psychology into her classes as a way to help people recognize and move through their habits and difficulties.  With gentleness and precision, Lani guides her students in the same manner many teachers have done for thousands of years -- to start by becoming aware of what is happening in the mind, the body, the breath and the environment, moment to moment, with no judgement.  This and other mindfulness practices are often the foundation for Lani's yoga classes, somatics sessions, or a dance/movement classes.  We can only start where we are.

One of the teachers that has most profoundly affected Lani's understanding of mindfulness practices is Pema Chödrön, an American Buddhist nun who has written and taught extensively on the subject throughout the world.   Here is a brief taste of Pema:
